No Bus Service to Windsor Knolls Middle School for
Holbrook, Loch Haven or Windsor Knolls Subdivisions!
Dear Neighbors:
If you have Middle School aged children you received a note indicating
the rezoning of our neighborhood as a non-transport neighborhood. This
means that all children residing in Windsor Knolls, Lochaven and Holbrook
will be forced to walk to WKMS with no option of busing. For some families
this does not present a problem, but for many it does present concerns
because of the length of distance, lack of adequate sidewalks in some
areas, secluded bike paths, or the crossing or walking along of Knolls
Parkway during dark and high traffic times of the day. Note that there
is not even a four way stop at the intersection of Windsor and Knolls
and no cross walks exist there nor at Graymarsh /Knolls, nor at Innsbrook/
Knolls) . If you you do not have middle school aged children yet, but
have up in coming ones - you probably haven't even been notified of
this change and by the time your child reaches middle school it will
be a done deal with no recourse. If you are concerned about this, now
is the time to act and share information with neighbors who may not
even know about this issue in Holbrook and Lochaven (FCPS wants all
Lochaven students to walk through Windsor Knolls via Summit Drive and
cross Windsor and the new designated crossing area and not along Windsor
to prevent children from walking along Windsor road).

of WKMS can be viewed here:

The new Urbana Middle School neighborhoods are experiencing a similar
problem with the FCPS transportation office rezoning their neighborhoods
as non-transport (walking) neighborhoods like the rezoning our neighborhoods
(Windsor Knolls, Holbrook and Lochaven). But the difference is Urbana
is much better organized at this point than we are. They've contact
their local delegate (who is also our delgate - Rick Weldon Richard_Weldon@house.state.md.us
) who is hosting a town meeting tomorrow evening, Tuesday July 25 (see
the official note below re time: Landon House and place: 7pm) to discuss
their problem. At the very least this may be a meeting we should attend
as well just to find out what can be done and meet people who are involved
making the decision.
Also if you are interested in emailing your concerns regarding the specifics
of children walking from your location in the designated non transport
area (some locations are worse than others and present different dangers)
below is a list of email addresses taken from the FCPS website and other
sources of people (school board members, administrators etc) who can
impact the decision making process. In your letters you may consider
inviting these people to walk with you (we could organize a huge walk
of these areas pointing out dangers).
